Multnomah Christmas Windows of the Past
The Multnomah Drug Store opened Saturday, November 13, 1926 in the space currently occupied by Bishop’s. Pharmacist William A. Siegfried took over the store in 1928. Siegfried bought the old Matthew Barron building across the street, built a new building, and opened his store there the day after labor day 1932. As business increased in the new store, Siegfried, feeling he needed a full-time assistant, hired Ben Adleman. Adleman purchased the Ellis Pharmacy across the street, in the building now occupied by Casa Vaca, in October 1944, and ran the store until 1960.
In the latter part of the nineteen forties William A. Siegfried hired Ed Colvin was hired to run the camera corner in the Multnomah Drug Store. In 1954 Ed struck out out on his own, opening Ed’s Camera Corner at 7824 SW Capitol Highway. You can see the window above at Anne Bocci, the current occupant.
I do remember Ed’s Camera Corner, where we used to race our HO cars. What memories…
My dad managed Weiby’s Shoe store for many years.
I grew up in Multnomah. Went grad school there in the 60s. Best time of my life. I lived right on Custer Park. I’m 60 now and still remember my teachers. I didnt fall to from the tree. I had a house on Baid st for years. I’m in an apartment downtown now but miss the village. My family was brown, but I came out white. Things were different then. ☮️
My name is Steve Adleman and my father Ben, owned Adleman Rexall Drugs. I went to Multnomah grade school and Wilson high. Multnomah was the greatest place on the planet and certainly Portland. It was a community that knew and helped each other without the bullshit we have today. Happiest days of my life.
